Within the framework of the 26th Colloquium Spectroscopic International, held in Sofia, the EPR Laboratory at the Institute of Kinetics and Catalysis – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) organized as a “post-conference” the international symposium “Electronic Magnetic Resonance of Disordered Systems” (EMARDIS) in the town Pravets. This was the first international scientific meeting in Bulgaria on the related topic and for the first time the name “electronic magnetic resonance” was introduced as a collection of varied methods based on the resonance absorption of energy from paramagnetic substances (EPR, ENDOR, ESE). During the meeting the informal “Bulgarian EPR Society” was founded on the initiative of N. D Yordanov from the EPR Laboratory at the Institute of Kinetics and Catalysis – BAS. The first founding members were N. D Yordanov, M. Zdravkova and R. Kefirov from Institute of Kinetics and Catalysis-BAS, S. Angelov from Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry-BAS, G. Gochev and E. Ganeva from the Chemistry Faculty of Sofia University “St. Kl. Ohridski “. Prof. Nicola D. Yordanov was elected as a Chairman (President) of the Society and Marieta Zdravkova as a Secretary.
Furthermore, the EPR laboratories at Institute of Kinetics and Catalysis – BAS and Chemistry Faculty of Sofia University, which were under general methodological guidance and were the main unit of the Bulgarian EPR Society, decided to continue to organize the international symposium “Electronic Magnetic Resonance of Disordered Systems “(EMARDIS) on any odd year.
In 1991, the First European EPR Conference in Padua (Italy) was organized and N. D Yordanov, G. Gotchev and M. Ivanova participated. There it was decided to establish a European Federation of EPR Societies. The initiative was adopted and thus the Bulgarian EPR Society became among the first five founding members of this federation. Immediately afterwards the Bulgarian EPR Society was officially registered at the court in late 1991.
